3 Reasons that Gums Bleed

Finding a slight tinge of red on your toothbrush or in the sink can be a sign of something that is wrong. If you think that your mouth is bleeding, it is important that you find out the reason. It is not always a sign of something bad, but it is worth checking it out in order to take the proper steps to care for a problem early on rather than waiting for the problem to exacerbate itself. There are many reasons that your gums may bleed, but the three most common reasons include:

•  Blood in your mouth can often signify gum disease. Even a slight tinge of blood can be an early sign. If you notice this, it is important to come in for an appointment. It is also important that you focus on your oral hygiene habits, making sure that you are brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once. If you skip the flossing step, you could greatly increase your risk of gum disease.
•  For women, fluctuating hormones can cause bleeding gums. This could occur during puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Because your hormones have a direct impact on the way that your body handles bacteria, your gums could be more prone to gingivitis when your hormone levels are all over the place.
•  If bleeding is severe or has lasted for a while, it could be a sign of something as serious as periodontal disease. At this point, you could be at risk of losing some or all of your teeth. If you notice that your gums are not only bleeding, but look as if they are pulling away from your teeth or your gums just look raw, it is very important that you come in for an appointment.
